WINZAVOD - Moscow Centre for Contemporary Art

Located only 15 minutes by car from the heart of Russia the Kremlin this former winery is now the heart of the country's burgeoning contemporary art scene. Once filled with the intoxicating aroma of wine, today it is filled with the heady excitement of creation where the new history of Russian art is being made.

Winzavod consists of seven buildings with a total space of 20,000 square meters (215,000 square feet) located on privately owned, gated property. Four of the country's most prestigious contemporary galleries moved here as soon as the space was open: XL, Aidan, M&J Guelman, and Regina. And eight more galleries have recently opened: Proun, Atelier #2, Meglinskaya, Art+Art, ArtBerloga, Paperworks, Fotoloft Gallery, and Gallery.photographer.ru. Winzavod is also home to artists' studios, a photography studio, an advertising agency, an avant-garde clothing store, a styling school, an art supply store, a bookstore and a stylish art-cafe.

WHAT'S ON WINZAVOD

And Water Flows Beneath the Ice / North Korean Contemporary Art

December 17, 2010 – January 30, 2011
The White Hall

And Water Flows Beneath the Ice is the first exhibition to show North Korean contemporary art in Russia. Contemporary North Korean visual art is comprised of an alliance between “Korean painting” and the legacy of the Soviet school of painting. North Korea has successfully avoided directly copying Socialist Realist devices and set out to support national painting traditions. By the turn of the century North Korean art formed a recognizable artistic style one could call Juche Socialist Realism and which bears the traces of both Communist ideals and a profound connection with its Korean aesthetic heritage. So much as learning about the existence of this artistic movement was previously impossible due both to the isolation of the DPRK itself and the political sanctions imposed on it. In that sense, the exhibition at Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art in association with Mansudae Art Studio is an unprecedented event. This is an attempt to cut a hole in the ideological ice in which our impressions of the DPRK are frozen and make a different kind of information – cultural information – accessible. Most of the works at the exhibition were made in “Korean painting,” the most representative NorthKorean technique, a subject of natural pride whose history stretches back more than 2,000 years. In addition to “korean painting,” the exhibition features embroidery, mosaics, and poster art.

Sergei Sapozhnikov - Withdrawal

December 10, 2010 - January 25, 2011
Paperworks Gallery

Sergei Sapozhnikov’s appearance on the Moscow art scene has been accompanied by the same kind of electricity that flows through his work. A graduate of a provincial university, Sapozhnikov was rapidly propelled to the most prestigious training institutes in Moscow, participating in exhibitions in Russia and abroad and curating art festivals in his home town of Rostov-on-Don. "In a series of landscape photographs, presented at his personal exhibition, “Withdrawal”, at Paperworks Gallery the human body is shot with angles so daring that one is immediately reminded of Rodchenko. Yet if the classic of Russian avant-garde linked the decisive contours of his turning figures to the social and cultural context, here the body is somewhat in opposition to its surroundings. The dichotomy of the figure is particularly evident in the landscape series, where the body is perceived as the core of the whole composition".

Nalbi - New Works

December 10, 2010 - January 23, 2011
Art+Art Gallery

Nalbi's drawings and paintings affect the essence of art and the representation of a reality. They possess a poetic value, which simultaneously lends intensity to his abstractions. Moreover his works can be placed in a very subtle color palette. The artist paints layer by layer with a clearly visible brushwork that he sets above the other, giving his paintings a haptic quality. The surface alludes to the individual segments of the layers below. The colors in his works are not uniform and flat, but nuanced and indicate space.

Max Sauco - Deep in your soul. Part II

December 15, 2010 — January 30, 2011
Fotoloft Gallery

Definition of his genre as photomanipulations raise more questions than gives answers: manipulations with what? With technics, consciousness, models, or life? In any case, this approach seems to be the most fair since the artist is not ashamed of his private world, its seeming paradoxicality; and the attempt to visualize it by surrealism is an attempt to startle the spectator out of inertial thinking.

Make - The Wall

January, 2011
The Wall Project

The Wall Project at WINZAVOD presents a new graffiti "The Wall" by Make. On "The Wall" the author recreates a conventional fragment of urban environment which could be seen if the wall wasn’t there. We got used to handling problems by understanding and solving. In this case the main problem is the wall between “Winzavod” and the street, between the people, between the artist and the audience. And if physical destruction of this wall of misunderstanding is impossible, simulation is the only way. The author creates an illusion of vacuum in his project trying to show that in fact neither the wall nor the artist, nor the problem exist — only open space without frontiers.

WHAT'S NEXT

Claire Fontaine - Fighting Gravity

February 2 - March 12, 2011
Regina Gallery

Fighting Gravity aims to approach the threatening magma deposited inside our lives by the recent economical crisis. Since the blatant failure of the mechanisms that supported the legitimacy of liberal capitalism was accompanied by a general impunity and a lack of public protests, we are left with the feeling that the only law that remains un-negotiable is the law of gravity. Fighting Gravity is itself a 'double exhibition' taking place at the same time in Moscow and London, questioning the meaning of opening a gallery with the same name and the same owner in two cities.

WINZAVOD ART REVIEW

The Wall Project

Press on Winzavod

“The newest addition to Moscow’s thriving contemporary art scene is Vinzavod, a 200,000-square-foot exhibition hall in an industrial section behind the Kursk Railroad Station. Though still a work in progress, it is already attracting some of the city’s most prominent galleries. Imagine SoHo way back when.”
The New York Times,
